Craigslist Rental Scam

January 28, 2010. NWMLS has been notified of a scam involving the placement of active residential listings on Craigslist as rentals. The perpetrator is posting the address, listing photos, and marketing remarks in these false ads. When a consumer inquires about the property, the scam artist responds and states that he is in West Africa for a prayer crusade and asks the consumer to fill out a rental application, which seeks personal information from the consumer.
NWMLS encourages all listing agents to check www.craigslist.org to ensure that your listings are not being falsely advertised as rental properties. Contact your local authorities and notify Craigslist if your listings are involved in a rental scam.
